This is as far from the truth as you can get. In my thirty-plus-year renovation career, some of the best-renovated homes have been owner-built for next to nothing. Money is not a luxury panacea.

I’ve seen too many homes where no expense has been spared. The result is a location where you won’t feel comfortable trying.

Some of the greatest decorative treasures are hidden in your head – out of the box – or at the thrift store or “Good Will” down the street.

Secret #2. Decorate for your family!

Decoration should be meaningful. You want to showcase your family’s talents and hobbies. If your family likes to play sports, their favorite sport should be the focal point of your decor, especially in the family room or the room where you spend most of your time.
The most important people in your home are your family. Show them off and let all your visitors and friends see what you look like as a family.

Secret #3. Involve the family in the decorating

When the family gets involved in a renovation project, you create family memories that will last a lifetime and will be talked about at family gatherings for years to come.

When the family is not involved in the renovation, they resent the intrusion into their space and will throw some “monkey key” at the project to express their displeasure.

Secret #4. Let’s go shopping in style as a family!

Not sure what style or theme you want for your next decorating project? Make it a fun family decision. Go fashion shopping with your family and finish at your favorite dessert or snack bar to discuss how your project will look and introduce your family.

Secret #5. Don’t spend too much!

You may have the nicest house on the block, but if you spend too much on renovations and your family finds it hard to do that, you’re going to hate your beautiful surroundings.

Your dissatisfaction will be reflected in how you take care of the room and your attitude towards it. This attitude will spread and your home will lose that warm and cozy feeling that the people who live there describe.
